New Technical Note - Chiral HPLC of Antimalarial Drugs
The chiral separations of several antimalarial compounds are detailed in a new Technical Note (TN-1013) from Phenomenex. Many pharmaceuticals are still sold as racemates, but have become candidates for what has been termed a "racemic switch" – the conversion of the racemate to the single (active) isomer.
These conversions to the enantiomerically pure form are looked on quite favorably as a way to increase therapeutic efficacy and reduce development time for new drugs. Drugs for the treatment and prevention of malaria is one area showing renewed interest. Possible combination therapies, where two or more antimalarial drugs are administered in tandem, are being explored.
