Better downstream processing needed for biopharmaceuticals

London/UK – Improved downstream processing is needed to take advantage of the expanding market for biopharmaceuticals, according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan. The reduced efficacy of existing drugs and a lack of treatments for many new diseases are expected to boost the market, but downstream processing has been a bottleneck in an otherwise efficient manufacturing process. Limited investment and lack of innovation in downstream processing account for 40 percent of biopharmaceutical production expenses and cause costly delays. As a result, contract manufacturing organizations (CMOs) are gaining prominence.
